Ceremonies, rituals and religious rites form the basis of every culture on the planet and shape the foundation of all society. Members of a group come together with a common intention - to say farewell to a loved one, to celebrate life events and establishing a connection with god.

The nature and essence of religious ritual, outside of the Abrahamic traditions, would seem strange, bizarre and downright otherworldly to a modern observer. When envisioned from a contemporary context they can appear primitive and savage. Early explorers venturing into uncharted lands around the world viewed their ceremonies as repugnant to common decency and morality. If they had taken the time to explore their rites and traditions they would have quickly discovered that, at their base level, they were the same.

It does appear, when evaluating the foundations of the ritual experience, as cultures advanced and became more civilized, instead of creating a stronger union with the divine, they become increasingly distant. Today, when many of us go to worship we find ourselves going through a set of hollow rituals that only vaguely represent their original objective. They have become powerless and devoid of meaning and purpose.
