The anthropological and ethnographical study of humanity’s four-million-year-old history in Africa, prior to the diaspora from Africa, is well documented. The template of humankind, - the psychic and generic roots of all present-day humanity – was nestled in East Africa at least 2.5-million-years- ago, before they left the continent. Homo erectus decided to leave the mother continent 1.7-million years ago, and round about 150 000 to 200 000 years ago Homo sapiens sapiens travelled out of Africa, using the same routes as Homo erectus.

The origin of modern humanity is Black and African. Civilization first emerged out of a rich, dark, creative synthesis of life forces along the Nile.  The earliest seeds of human civilization germinated in the Upper-Nile valley and the lakes region of Eastern Africa, when our species began to cultivate and harvest grain, around 17,000 to 18,300 years ago.

Dr Edward Bynum explores the influence of the Nubian civilization (called Kush by the Egyptians and modern-day Sudan) on the Dravidians of the Indus Valley, the Kemetic Egyptian civilization, Mesopotamia, the Arabian Peninsula, the Chinese in Asia, the Greeks, Celts and West Africa. Twelve Nubian kings ruled the Middle East before the Egyptian dynasty; the Egyptian 25th Dynasty were Kushite (Nubian kings); King Gudea governor of Sumer was an African and many of the Kings of Sumer and Elam were Black; skulls found in Harappa and Mohenjo Daro in the Indus Valley are identical to those found in Nubia; the first king of China, Fushi, was described as “black with woolly hair”, as was the Shang dynasty; Yu Nai Hwang-Ti, prominent in the Tao philosophy was ethnically descendant from the Black Elamites and Akkadians; on the Arabian peninsula, Yemen and Oman were ruled by the Black Adites, Mineans and Sabeans; and so it continues…

Dr Bynum discusses the Nubian impact on ancient trade routes; the origins of writing – their Meroitic script consisted of 24 symbols, as yet to be deciphered; the earliest calendars; the female fertility religion of Isis and the Black Madonna, which was perhaps a reflection of a deep unconscious memory of the mitochondrial DNA mother, construction and city planning – there are more pyramids in Nubia than Egypt; origins of  yoga and the martial arts, - all elements of an underlying Black Unconsciousness in the human psyche.

Edward Bruce Bynum, Ph.D., ABPP, is a clinical psychologist and former director of the behavioral medicine program at the University of Massachusetts Health Services. The 2005 recipient of the Abraham H. Maslow Award from the American Psychological Association and the author of several books, including Dark Light Consciousness, The Dreamlife of Families: The Psychospiritual Connection and his latest Our African Unconscious. He is currently in private practice in Hadley, Massachusetts.  His website is  https://obeliskfoundation.com/
